First Edition of the Robert Capa Awards in Aitona

OBJECTIVE

To honor historical memory by increasing scientific knowledge of the Civil War in the lands of Lleida. The coup of ’36 was the beginning of a civil war that, for three years, struck Spanish and Catalan society. The civilian population suffered the hardships of a very harsh war: broken families, hunger, bombings, deaths, injuries, exile, repression… The Republican defeat at the Battle of the Ebro led to the fall of Catalonia. Subsequently, exile and repression marked a bloody beginning in Catalan lands. Robert Capa documented the Republican offensive in Aitona on November 7, 1938. Surely, there is still more to be documented about the Segre Front to continue building the narrative of the Civil War in our region. From the Aitona City Council and the Institute of Ilerdenc Studies, we seek works that build this history and cover possible gaps and shadows in the overall narrative. The Capa Awards aim to highlight people, documents, and works that contribute to this aspect, especially regarding the Segre Front of the Spanish Civil War. The second objective is to honor the pioneering war photojournalist of the 1930s, Robert Capa, pseudonym of Ernö Friedmann. He produced a splendid report on the attack by the Republican army through Aitona and the Serrabrisa area in Baix Segre. A daring photographer who, over the years, became one of the best. There are two categories based on the fields we consider essential and necessary to keep the memory alive. Historical research from different perspectives: journalistic, documentary, etc., journalistic or scientific research to disseminate content related to the Segre Front in particular and the Civil War and its effects in Catalonia in general, and images: photographs that identify conflict areas as a reflection of harsh wars and their effects on society.
